If I were to ask your dog, on a scale of 1-10, how fun is it to spend time with you? What do you think they would say?
As I learn about dogs and how they think I am constantly reminded that my relationship with them needs to come before rules. My dog will want to listen to me if they enjoy being with me and I will enjoy being with them if they listen to me.
Were does this start? I can tell you that it does not start with teaching our dogs to Sit, Down and Stay.
We want our dog to feel joy when they are with us…….not compulsion!! This does not mean that we don’t have any boundaries with our dogs. Boundaries are important in any relationship. We need times of rest, work and play.
What does this look like?
- Keep our training short and end on a positive.
- Set our dogs up for success, not failure. We do this by not overwhelming our dogs or expecting too much from them.
- Have clear communication with our dogs to avoid confusion which leads to frustration.
- Keep our mindset positive. Negative emotions and tones do not produce positive results.
These are a few suggestions to get you started. I guarantee you will see a difference in your relationship with your dog!!
